Ten-Month-Olds and Tiaras

Today Annistyn was in her first beauty pageant.

I LOVED doing pageants when I was little. My mom only started putting me in them because I begged her to when I was 3. I placed in my first one and I was in love! I did several throughout the years and actually did pretty good. I won a few and placed in several. When I graduated high school, I cashed in all the savings bonds that I had won by doing pageants and WOW! I had a pretty good bit of money!

I was first alternate in our county's junior miss, and that money paid for a lot of the extra hours I took that my regular scholarship wouldn't cover. (Because they think 16 hrs. is a "full load") Anyway- long story short- I will never MAKE Annistyn do them if she decides she doesn't want to. But if it is something she likes and something we can have fun doing together, it could open a lot of doors for her one day.

I haven't put her in any because I felt like she was too young. Since she is walking and standing up now, I thought the "Miss Relay for Life" pageant would be a good one to start with.

Younger age divisions are always asked to only wear Sunday or heirloom style dresses. I am so glad because I think they look much more natural. Lucky for us, I didn't have to go buy a $400 heirloom dress because we already had one. My mom made me a pink Swiss batiste dress with french lace when I was little. At the time she didn't know that her granddaughter would be wearing it 22 years later.

We arrived at LBW with all of our things. I had two bags, the dress on a hanger, and you would know they would only let one person (me) back with Annistyn. So we parted ways with my mom and when we got to the dressing room all I could smell was hair spray. We were sharing a dressing room with the "toddler miss" contestants. I felt like I had walked in the show "Toddlers and Tiaras" on TLC. There was make-up and hair curlers from one end of the room to the other. I don't remember it being quite that bad when I was little.

We were the first age group and Annistyn was #1. She really liked the stage. She liked the other little babies in her age group. We wrestled backstage while they were introducing the judges and talking about the pageant. She did not want to wait her turn, she kept trying to run on the stage. She held my hand and walked beside me a little bit. She smiled and was excited about all the lights and people. I wasn't sure if she would like it or if it would scare her.

Here we are on stage:

When it was time to crown the winners, we went back on stage. She won photogenic. I had used the picture that is on our blog header right now.

The little girl that brought her the sash wasn't sure how to pin it on her, so I was trying to do that for her!

They started calling out the second and first alternate and....

Guess what sweet baby was the winner?!

We were really excited. The crown really didn't want to stay on her head though.

She had her picture made for the paper and here is one we took afterwards. You can tell she is getting sleepy. She wouldn't let go of me to stand by herself.

Here are some I took after I took her crown and sash off. I am POSITIVE that she will wear this dress many many more times, but I wanted to get some pictures of her wearing it today.

My mom is so talented. There are several dresses like this that Annistyn will be able to wear over the next few years. It is so fun for her to wear dresses that I wore when I was little. Especially since they were made by my mom.

Here is a picture I got of her sashes and crown:

We had a lot of fun and I hope it is something that we enjoy doing together for years to come. Everybody loves getting dressed up! I will never spray tan my 4-year-old or give her fake teeth or hair extensions like they do on Toddlers and Tiaras, but if she grows up and wants to be Miss America (like I did!) then I will be there right beside her cheering her on.

Speaking of Miss America...
That was my dream at one time. Every year from age 4 or 5 on, I would stay up watching Miss America. I would cry when the girl I picked didn't win. I would record it and watch it again and cry again. Ask my mom- it is really true. I actually competed in some local preliminaries, but they are SO much work and I just wasn't "bred" to win at the level. I still love watching it and I usually host a "Miss America" pajama party and we all wear crowns and watch it together. Here's some pictures from our 2007 party-

Annistyn and I watched it tonight and she was GLUED to it. She sat in my lap the whole time and watched every second of it.

Miss Virgina won, by the way.

It makes me sad when I see how "modernized" they have made it. Local competitions and some state ones (like Alabama's) are based on the old standards- which I like a lot better. I like seeing Miss America in a suit- not jeans and a tank top. I don't think the cleavage is appropriate for evening gown and the swimsuit walk tonight was really risque. I just would like it to be a little classier. The questions they asked tonight were not very intense either. When I was in Miss Troy University, of all the pieces of paper in the bowl, I drew out the one that said, "What steps would you take to stop illegal immigration?" I mean, really, if there was an answer to that question- it wouldn't be an issue in the first place. So I had to answer that off the top of my head in front of 500 people. Then tonight, at Miss America, one of the questions was something like- do you think sports figures should be good role models? Well, duh!

Alrighty- well that was a really lengthy and possibly somewhat boring post. In conclusion, my sweet baby won Baby Miss Relay for Life today and she was so stinkin' cute in her pink dress! :)

Two Dozen

I have been on this earth for 2 dozen years!

Yesterday was my birthday and it was a great day.
It started out with my daddy bringing me a card at 5:40 a.m. He is the only person I know who would be at my house before 6 a.m. to wish me happy birthday! As I was driving out of my driveway, he had also put a sign up (facing our house so I would see it) that said "Happy Birthday Princess".

My mom made me pancakes for breakfast. At school, the grandmother of one of my students brought me a balloon bouquet and pink cupcakes for my whole class. Then at lunch, my mom and Annistyn brought me a lasagna plate from Steamboat and I got to get a mid-day hug from my sweet baby!

Michael bought me the "real" bracelet and earrings to match my "real" pearl necklace that he gave me for our anniversary.

We went to Mellow Mushroom for dinner- my FAVORITE! We had cake and presents there too.

I think this may be the first birthday that I forgot about 4 times during the day that it was my birthday. Age 16, 18, and 21 were the "golden" ages that you wanted to hit. 24 really isn't too special for any reason.

I was thinking though that I have grown up the most from age 23 to 24- for obvious reasons! And every year I always stop and think- what have I done this year? This year I didn't have to think too hard about it!

I think I have had a pretty good 24 years. I have done the things that I have always wanted to do.

Graduated High School (age 18):

Graduated College (age 20):

Gotten Married (age 20):

Gotten a Teaching Job (age 21)

Finished my Masters degree (Age 22): No picture because I didn't "walk". They just mailed it.

Become a Mommy (Age 23):

I can honestly say that I do not want to be younger. I am where I want to be. I really didn't enjoy high school very much because I always secretly wanted to be wearing the holiday sweaters from Stein Mart. I always felt out of place because I knew there was something bigger that I hadn't gotten to yet. Everyone said, "Don't wish your life away!"

But I am sure now that I was right. There is something much bigger than twirling during halftime of the football games...

Or getting ready to go "roll" yards during Homecoming...

There is so much more to life than what you ever can imagine when you are 16 or 17.

It's taken me 2 dozen years to get here- but here I am...

Sorry the pictures are so rough. It was really dark in there and I was using Michael's Kodak- not our good camera. I tried to lighten them enough that you could actually tell what was in the picture!

My cake (made by my Mommy!):

Annistyn enjoying cake:

Me and Annistyn on my birthday last year:

This year:

And because you know I love a walk down memory lane, here is me at my 13th birthday party. We made a "movie" that just happened to be about us all growing up and here we are posing for a picture at the "finale" of our movie:

The other girl in the picture is my friend Kristan. She has a little boy that is 1 1/2 years old now.

This picture is extremely funny to me now more than ever!

Well, I'm off to bed. We have a busy day tomorrow that I am sure you will hear about later! Enjoy the weekend!

Splish, Splash! She Loves Taking a Bath!

Saturday night Annistyn and I were playing in her room. I left her in there for a minute to turn her bath water on and let it warm up. When I came back in, I looked at her and said, "Do you want to get a bath?"
She started making her excited "Ooh" "ooh" noise and got down on her hands and knees, crawled right past me, and then out the bedroom door. I just followed her to see what she was going to do. She crawled down the hall to the bathroom, went inside, pulled up on the edge of the bathtub and started bouncing up and down and trying to get in. She was throwing her leg up in the air trying to climb up the side of it and leaning over the edge trying to pull herself up high enough to jump over. It was really cute so I got a few pictures. Sorry the toilet is in them. Her bathroom isn't very big.

Sunday she wore her polka dotted dress to church. She wore it once around September, but then she started wearing her holiday clothes. I thought we would get it back out now that all the holidays are over (until Valentine's Day).

Here's both my babies:

I told her to sit on the couch like a "big girl" and she did for just a minute.

But she is too wild to stay still for long.

Tonight I got the raviolli back out. This time it was chicken and carrot. She loved it just as much as last time and here is the proof:

I'm not sure why she likes to put it in her hair.

It didn't stop her though!

Well, that's all for now. We have a busy week coming up. Don't forget to leave a comment on my last post if you want to be in the drawing for the luggage tags! :)

Something's Fishy...

I really don't think anyone believes me when I tell them about how much Annistyn eats. I agree. It's obsurd to think that I go to a restaurant and order a grouper fillet for my 10-month-old.

So I thought I would share some pictures of Annistyn enjoying her Thursday night tradition.

Sorry these are really bad quality pictures. I took them with my Blackberry.

Annistyn at her favorite table at Hilltop:

What's left of her grouper fillets. Note that I said filletS. There were two. The one on the right is the one she was eating on.

Here she is in action:

(Note: If you are wondering why she is wearing a disposable food mat as a bib, it is because her mommy is nuts and forgot her bib.)

This is what is usually left when she eats a chicken taco at Old Mexico...

Gotta love a girl with an appetite!

I was slightly concerned when she started wanting to eat only table food. But at her 9 month check-up, I asked Dr. E and he said it was great! I guess when you think about it- baby food is just to introduce the textures.

It seems like yesterday we were giving her the first few bites of cereal.

Wednesday, Annistyn woke up with a croupy cough. She wasn't doing it very often, but it sounded kind of rough. We really debated over whether to take her to the doctor or not. Since she doesn't go to daycare, she really hasn't had a problem with being sick. I was scared that sitting on the "sick" side of the waiting room would expose her to strep throat, RSV, or the stomach virus that is going around.

We decided to take her, just to be on the safe side. We agreed that we would give them the cell phone number and wait in the car with her. She enjoyed sitting in the car and watching movies while she waited. The appointment time was 10:45 and since I have -3, yes NEGATIVE 3, sick days- I decided that Michael could handle it. I worried all morning about her. I HATED the fact that I wasn't there. I knew Michael had it under control, but still... I'm her mommy. If she had been really sick, I would have definitely been there.

Diagnosis: Just congestion, like we thought.

So we ended up getting this stuff for her:

Does this look like a sick baby to you?

I can assure you that she feels just fine. Her cough is getting a little better. She hasn't woken up during the night with it or anything.

Her hair was really curly yesterday since it was raining. I couldn't really capture that in a picture last night. But I tried...

I just love her curls... and everything else about her!

And finally...

The giveaway I have been promising for 22 days now.

I am giving away a set of two (matching) luggage or diaper bag tags. These can have a picture, initials, or WHATEVER you want on them. They are really really customizable.

I drew this one up, just to use as an example. Here are the front and back...

If you would like to be in the "drawing" for the luggage tags, just leave a comment! I will announce the winner (tentatively) next Saturday!

Have a super weekend! :)
